The Kachin Manaw Festival (Myitkyina, Kachin State)
Myanmar is renowned for its year-round festivals, earning it the title “Land of Festivals.” The Kachin Manaw Festival, also known as Manau Pwe, is one festival that stands out because it showcases the country’s ethnic culture and solidarity. The festival, which has been going on for more than 30 years, honors the New Year, victories in battles, and tribal reunions. The field features beautifully decorated 20 meters high Manaw poles in Kachin motifs, each serving as a centerpiece of the festival grounds around which the dancers parade. The dance procession is often led by community leaders, who are backed by the rhythmic beats of loud drums. Tourists are free to join the locals in experiencing the joyous festival. The dancing festival typically lasts for a week.
The pavilions surrounding the field offer Kachin souvenirs, traditional clothing, coffee, and gemstones, making for a bustling and vibrant atmosphere.
