Begin your journey from Mandalay and embark on a scenic two-hour drive to Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo), a picturesque hill station standing at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level. Originally established as a British hill station in the late 19th century, the town was named after Colonel May, who created it as a vacation spot for British Army officers stationed in Mandalay. During colonial times, it was turned into a hill post that attracted a diverse range of communities, including Nepalese, Hindus, and several tribal groups. Today, it is a popular destination for locals looking for a weekend getaway.
The British turned Pyin Oo Lwin into a hill post during colonial times, drawing a variety of communities including Nepalese, Hindus, and many tribal tribes. It has now established itself as a well-liked weekend getaway spot for the locals.
Upon arrival, visit Peik Chin Myaung, a large sacred cave complex located 23 km from Pyin Oo Lwin. This several hundred million-year-old limestone stalactite cave features a 20-foot-wide entrance and a 1600-foot-long interior. A natural spring located at the back of the cave creates a natural spring that cascades through the interior, which is adorned with hundreds of Buddha images and shrines.
Then visit the local market. Here, you can browse through a variety of local products such as wine, strawberry jam, and coffee, as well as woolen clothing, handicrafts, and other locally-made goods. The market is a great place to become fully immersed in the community’s distinctive offerings and local culture.
Afterward, explore the natural beauty of the Kandawgyi National Botanical Garden, a 432-acre garden laid out by Sir Harcourt Butler, the former governor of Burma. The garden features flower beds reminiscent of those found in an English country garden and is home to an array of plant species from around the world.
Finish your day by taking a leisurely stroll through these beautifully landscaped gardens before heading back to Mandalay in the late afternoon.
